Comments that the Prince of Arragon took too long, only to choose the wrong casket. Portia also comments how the suitors are all fool that do not know which casket they should choose
Portia looks down on all the suitor due to their undesirable traits and failure to choose the right casket. “Thus hath the candle singed the moth. O these deliberate fools! When they do choose, They have the wisdom by their wit to lose.”
Prince of Arragon
rejects the lead casket as he feels that Portia is not fair enough for him to be willing to risk anything. He rejects the gold casket as he feels that what the “crude” world desires may not be what he wants. He chooses the silver casket as he feels he deserve the very best. He feels angry
The Prince of Arragon is arrogant, thinking he is special and worthy.
“I will not choose what many men desire Because I will not jump with common spirits And rank me with the barbarous multitudes.”
Messenger
Tells Portia that a young Venetian man has arrived to tell his master is about to arrive, and has sent gifts. Besides his nice polite greetings, his gifts are expensive.
