West Quay Revision Resource
Why did the area need development into West Quay
Derelict and run down pipeworks.
Degraded land buildings
There was anti social behaviour and crime in the area.
There were also dangerous structures
Discarded chemicals and materials left which were dangerous and discouraged people from coming to the area
The factory ground was heavily polluted by mercury and cadmium.
There was valuable land in the centre not being put to good use which was an eyesore and it could of been counted as brownfield land.
The factories that were in the place of West quay
The Pirelli Factory
Pirelli occupied the entire site along the length of West Quay Road from 1914 until 1990 although all production had moved to Eastleigh by the late 1920’s. The land was then cleared to make way for the original West Quay development.
