Why would Fisher go to war?
He is more the type to escape the draft by fleeing to Canada. Maybe even quitting his American citizenship.
Fisher's dilemma
He's trying to find himself. Discover who he is.
Col. North shares stories about Ashley, and how he's trying to give her space
To find himself in the shadow of his promenient father
Col North says to Fisher he needs adventure. But he needs to serve a bigger cause.
Enter Anika, who tells Fisher fully about her background. What she needs Fish to do
Wayland says Fish wants respect, admiration. "There's no finer way to earn it than serving your country."
Wayland says that Howard was a cocky, but inwardly unsure young doctor in WWII (when Wayland first knew him). But he was matured by the war. It set him down the path of success the rest of his life.
Wayland assures Fisher that Howard was not always a great man and this is precisely what Fisher wants to hear.
Wayland: And, if you want to top your father, as I think you do, you can do no better than joining the special forces. It's a far sight more glamourous than what Howard did, checking blood pressure of Generals at HQ. You'll be where the action is. Behind enemy lines. As adventerous a place in the war as you could ask for. If I were young again, I'd go with you.
Wayland's secret weapon: He explains that he wants Fisher to look into a secret he's heard about Howard. He explains he and Howard went into a private business arrangement together many years earlier. The leader of the gang, who Fish is supposed to find, has been smuggling goods for Howard without Wayland's approval. Howard wants Fish to find the man and see if these side deals are indeed happening.
To learn Howard's secrets is exactly what Fisher wants to find out. He has been caught by Wayland's request. Hook line and sinker.
Anika tells Fisher there is a gang hiding in the jungle who have experience with smuggling goods through difficult terrain and through hot spots of Asia. Their expertise is to carry goods through war zones.
Fish is vulnerable; the one-two punch from Wayland and Anika is more than he can resist
Personal pressures
He's lost interest in the bar. Becomiing a great businessman is not likely in the cards
But he still desires to be as good as his father.
...or even better than his father
Encountering Col. Wayland North, an old friend of his father's, who Fisher hasn't seen for a long time.
Wayland mentions his daughter, Ashley, who ran away from home
The subplot has been discussing Ashley all along. Up to this point, we aren't sure if Ashley's parents are pursuing her. This is the first time that is discussed.
Wayland discusses that he knows where his daughter is. "But she chooses to live away from us. I'm not going to interfere with her life right now."
This makes Fish like Wayland even more: He wants a father who doesn't interfere with his life. He thinks Wayland is fathering how he should be by letting the girl "sow her wildoats" before coming home.
He explains that he's had to talk his wife into letting Ashley live on her own. Later, Margaret confides in Fisher about her wayward daughter, Ashley.
How does Wayland know Fisher is in Antwerp?
Howard has orchestrated the meeting between Wayland and Fisher. Though this isn't revealed until later.
After visiting South Africa, Benny contacts Howard, who contacts Wayland
What reason does Wayland give for knowing Fisher is in Antwerp?
Wayland contacts Fisher while he is in Antwerp. It is a coincidence, because Fisher is already there.
Wayland explains that Anika's husband told him that Fisher is in town.
Wayland sends a telegram
Anika is working for Col. North
Fisher encounters Anika's husband when he goes to her apartment.
Fisher later learns that Anika's ex-husband is also working for Col. North
Anika and her ex have a working relationship with each other, which intrigues Fisher (later, he bases his dealings with Robbie on this relationship he has seen)
Reasons for going:
He's in love with Anika. She is talking him into going.
Impressed with Col North, Fisher wants a taste of military glory for himself
The draft is coming
He belives he can make a name for himself as an agent of the secret forces
He's idealistic. Won over by Col. North's sales pitch. North's discussion about Howard is too appealing to reisist.
Wayland's Influence on Fisher
Although Fish is not going to be a great businessman, or doctor, he wants to still measure up to his father
Fish watches the respect Col. North engenders from his men, and is greatly impressed
Fish thinks: If medicine or business isn't right for him, then maybe the military is
The family reaction to Fisher going to war
Robbie thinks he's crazy
JB and X think he's crazy
What about young Diamond?
