North America is bounded on the north by the Arctic Ocean and the Aleutian Islands, on the south by the Caribbean Sea and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

Its biggest country is Canada and its smallest country is St Kitts and Nevis with only about 54,000 inhabitants. This island country is located in the Caribbean Sea. North America also includes the huge Greenland Island in the northeast and the islands that are located in the north of the Atlantic Ocean, with that at its northern end the continent extends for almost half of the globe.

Central America is the subcontinent of the American continent. Its territory goes from the isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico to the south of the Isthmus of Panama. It is, then, the strip of land that joins the other two subcontinents, North America and South America. According to the classification of Spanish-speaking countries, this subcontinent includes the Caribbean region.
There are seven independent countries in Central America:
Belize
Guatemala
Honduras
El Salvador
Nicaragua
Costa Rica
Panama
HYDROGRAPHY: Central America does not have long rivers due to its isthmic geography. The longest river is Usumacinta with 1.100km. It starts in Guatemala and flows into the Gulf of Mexico. The Coco river with 680km is the longest one within Central America. It starts in Honduras and flows into Cabo, Nicaragua. Central America has a lot of lakes. Two of the largest are in Nicaragua: Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua.
RELIEF It is mostly a mountainous and rugged region. The North American mountain system continues in Central America where it is called the Cordillera Central which crosses all the countries of this region. It has a lot of volcanoes, around 60 volcanoes in the interior (not active) and 31 on the Pacific coast (active). The Tajumulco volcano is the highest peak in Guatemala and all of Central America with an altitude of 4222mts above sea level
CLIMATE: The tropical climate is the dominant one, although it also depends on the altitude. Rainfall is abundant, especially on the Atlantic side.
Caribbean region
This region includes more than 7,000 islands, islets, and coral reefs.
The islands and islets vary in its topography; some are relatively flat with sandy soils, while others, especially the largest, have fertile land, mountains and even volcanoes.
