SUBJECT AND MATERIAL INFORMATION 1. Information about the subject, grade, quarter and learning competency are stated.
- Information about the selection’s author and title and source are stated. If the source is a Website, the URL or http address is given.
- A topic question related to the competency is given. It is written in an interesting way or it catches the reader’s attention.
SELECTION 4. The chosen selection is short but substantial. Different text-dependent questions may be asked about it.
INTRODUCTION 5. A brief introduction is given. The introduction contains the background, a problem question to think about or answer, the purpose of the reading and statement of author and title of selection. The introduction ends with a reminder to students to remember the story and answer questions after the reading.

- There are questions related to the problem question. These questions involve having the student make a claim, cite evidence and give reasons (C-E-R).
- Students are asked to state/mark/highlight text parts that support answers to the different questions. Instructions on the type of mark or color of highlight are stated.
TEXT-DEPENDENT QUESTIONS FOR HOW THE TEXT SAYS IT 9. There are questions about Vocabulary. A list of new words is given.
- Students are asked to encircle new words in the text and give their meaning.
- There are questions about Text Structure or how information in the text is organized. Choices are given in parentheses for students to select and discuss a particular structure.
- A graphic organizer related to the Text Structure is given for students to answer. Students are instructed to mark or highlight and use the text from the selection to fill in the graphic organizer. Instructions on the type of mark or color of highlight are stated.
TEXT-DEPENDENT QUESTIONS FOR WHAT THE TEXT MEANS 13. There are questions asking about the Author’s Purpose or what the author wants to show to the reader or what the reader should know, understand or believe.
- Students are asked to state/mark/highlight text parts that support answers to the different questions. Instructions on the type of mark or color of highlight are stated.
- There are questions about Inference or discussing the implications of what the text says. Students are asked to explain their answer.
TEXT-DEPENDENT QUESTIONS FOR WHAT THE TEXT MEANS TO YOU 16. There are questions asking about the text’s Connection to Real Life. Students are asked to explain their answer.

- Specific text quotations are given for What the Text Says, How the Text Says It, and What the Text Means.
- Answer key for completed Graphic Organizer is provided.
- Sample marked text is provided.
