The Lorax
: "a cautionary tale"
The young boy
represents young people who want to learn about how to live in a more sustainable way.
The boy learns that "UNLESS" people care about the environment, there will be negative consequences for everyone.
The boy ends up getting the last Truffula Tree seed from the Once-ler, and he is told to plant it so that the Lorax and the other creatures can return home.
Telling the story to the boy helps the Once-ler understand The Lorax's final message.
The Lorax
represents the environment and people who defend it.
Truffula Trees
Humming Fish
Brown Bar-ba-loots
Swomee-Swans
The Lorax will only be able to breathe again once the Truffula Trees grow back, and there are finally places for him and the creatures to live.
The Once-ler
represents industrialization and greed and businesses that use natural resources without respecting the environment.
All of the Truffula Trees were used up to make a profit from the Once-ler's Thneed factory.
no more Truffula fruit made them starve
pond is too polluted to live in
toxic air made them sick
The Once-ler ends up living above a shop at the edge of town, being anti social and poor.
The Lorax tries to warn the Once-ler but the Once-ler refuses to listen.
The Once-ler only cares that he has damaged the environment once it affects his business. This links to the idea of businesses caring about profits over the health of the environment.
This whole story is about how important it is to protect the natural resources that people and animals need.
