Strenghts of official statistics

useful to make comparisions

they are used to help governments and another organization plan ahead
they are easily available and free
Limitations of official statistics
statistics are socially constructed instead of objective
may not be completed or accurate
are produced by others and are unlikely to contain exactly what a sociologist needs
are funded by the government so may be biased in their favor
comparasitions can be made
Marxists argue that statistics reflect the interests of the ruling class
Quantitative data can be presented in different forms
