Character Study Chapter 7
Kel
Shows tenacity and grim persistence.
During the three days, Kel had to persevere to complete her physical training and classwork
For the next three days Kel pursued her class-work and physical training doggedly.
Careless
Kel had been late to one class, to one meal, and to the riding corral
Kel had been late to one class, to one meal, and to the riding corral the day before, when Peachblossom had been grumpier than usual.
Decisive
She can easily strike up a plan and decides to go with it. An example of this would be when she decided to bring her classwork to armory
At last she hit on a plan and bore her work to the armory. First, she rolled chain mail in barrels full of sand to scour away dirt until she wearied. Then she attacked her assignments
Determined
Kel has still continued doing her arm exercises without giving up.
Only her sparrows' reaction to her arm-strengthening exercises - they lined up on her windowsill like spectators at a tournament
Encouraged
Kel's sparrows kept looking at her arm as it was being strengthened
They lined up on her windowsill like spectators at a tournament - made Kel smile that day
Calm & Does not crack under pressure
She repeatedly lied to Wyldon that she did not get into a fight and simply said that she fell down even thought she did not.
"Did they say that?" asked Kel, her face as blank as any true-born Yamani's. "How strange. I fell down."
Smart
She knew that if she said that if she had told Wyldon that she got into a fight Wyldon will get rid of her
She tried to breathe through her nose, and winced. "I fell down, Lord Wyldon," she said carefully. Lifting the handkerchief from her cut, she examined it with her good eye, and pressed the clean linen to the split in the other brow.
Joren
Bossy
Joren ordered Merric to pick up heavy books
Passing the pages' main library, she heard the slam of a heavy book striking the floor. "Pick that up for me, will you, Merric?"
Rude
Laughed when Kel tried to stop Merric from being bullied
"Not like this, it's not," replied Kel. "Us fetching and carrying gloves and armor polish, that's enough. Forcing people to mop with their clothes and pick up things dropped on purpose has nothing to do with being a page." Joren laughed softly,
Petty
He used Merric to pick up his books
Passing the pages' main library, she heard the slam of a heavy book striking the floor. "Pick that up for me, will you, Merric?"
Duke Baird Of Queenscove
Respected by Neal
Neal was talking and his father ordered him to go to waiting room. Neal obeyed Duke Baird and went out.
"If you cannot be quiet while I work," his father told him patiently, "go into the
waiting room."
Kind
Duke Baird healed Kel's nose and let her go.
Baird let go of her and rubbed his hands. "I am impressed, young lady," he told
her with a wry smile. "You have been royally pounded."
Nice
Complimented Kel by saying she is strong.
"You're quite strong, you know. I couldn't have done nearly so much if you weren't in the pink of health to begin with. You didn't fight me, either. You made it easy."
Wyldon
Mean
Still cals Kel a probationer and not by her real name
"A word after lunch, probationer," Wyldon called as she looked around for Neal.
Kind
Wyldon offered Kel to use his handkerchief and return it to him
"Have it washed and returned to me," Wyldon ordered.
Caring
Tells Kel to see a palace healer to heal her nose
Now you'd better see a palace healer. That nose looks broken.
Dismissed."
He is a product of his upbringing
He assumes that Kel wants to quit because his own daughters would already have
Wyldon stared. "I imagine you have now come to your senses and wish to go home. At this time of year that will be difficult"
Neal
Thoughtful and Caring
Neal asks what is wrong with Kel and cares about her well-being. He realizes that Kel is not felling the same way as a normal day.
Both Roald and Neal were looking at her. She was certain that Neal didn't know about the lance, but what about the prince? He was one of Joren's year-mates. Despite his joining her and Neal from time to time, she wasn't sure what he thought of her.
Dramatic
Dramatically told his father what he had to deal with
"There!" cried Neal, holding up his hands. "You see what I have to deal with!"
Annoyed
He was angry that the third-year pages were all cornering Kel
"So much for chivalrous ideals, eh?" Neal demanded. "Three pages in their third year of training jump a first-year - a first-season page!"
Disappointed and Angry
Neal is disappointed and angry at Kel for starting a fight
"What possessed you?" demanded Neal. He seemed as vexed by this matter-of-fact discussion as by Kel's story. "Why in the name of all the gods in all the Eastern and Southern Lands would you start a fight with them?"
Sarcastic
Said that they noticed when Kel says she hasn't got anything to say.
"Kel shook her head in answer to the prince's query. "I haven't anything to say."
"Dear girl, we noticed," drawled Neal in his most scholarly-elegant way."
