Reasons for failure
Resistance
BEF: The Kaiser had not seen any threat in the British expeditionary force. The soldiers were very well trained but they outnumbered. Importantly they delayed the German advance.

French resistance: With Belgium and Britain delaying the Germans, France had time to move soldiers towards Paris and to stand on the River Marne

Germany was worried they would have to fight on two fronts (France on the Western border, Russia on the Eastern border). Count von Schlieffen the chief of the German general staff, prepared the Schlieffen plan to avoid this
