WHAT IS THE ECM?
Definition: extracellular matrix (ECM) any substance produced by cells and secreted into the extracellular space within the tissues

COMPOSITION OF ECM
consists of collagen fibers (protein) cross-linked by accessory proteins in a matrix of proteoglycans (protein + polysaccharides)
concentrated under epithelia (BASAL LAMINA) provides a base for the cells to sit on and acts as a molecular sieve and substrate for migrating cells
Epithelial Tissues

In epithelia, extracellular matrix is sparse, cells are directly joined to one another and carry the mechanical load themselves.
Integrins couple the matrix outside the cell to the cytoskeleton inside it - attaches to each through the membrane - attach to fibronectin which in turn bind to collagen. Collagen doesn't directly bind with integrins
HOW DOES THE STRUCTURE AND COMPOSITION OF THE ECM DIFFER BETWEEN DIFFERENT TYPES OF CONNECTIVE TISSUE?
