Digestive enzymes
Pespsin
-protein digesting enzymes
Goblet cells-
Produce mucus (provide against stomach acid)
Chief cells-
produce pepsinogen
Parietal cells-
produce HCI and intrinsic factor
Amylase
- digest starch
Location of digestion/absorption of each macromolecule
Duodenum
-First portion of SI attached to stomach (chemical digestion)
Jejunum
- middle section (main site of nutrient absorption)
Ileum
- end portion (absorption)
Pancreas
- (located behind the stomach) -produce digestive enzymes
-regulates blood sugar by producing insulin
Salivary glands-
Produces saliva (contains salivary amylase to digest starch)
Major organs of the digestive systems
Liver
- Largest gland in body (inferior to diaphragm) -functions as storage for glycogen, fat, and soluble vitamins
-removal of drugs, alcohol, e.t.c
Gallbladder
- (under liver on right side) - stores bile
Mouth
- major part of mechanical digestion as teeth break down food in small pieces
Stomach
- -Mechanical/chemical digestion
Small Intestine
Peristalsis and segmental movement-
(Muscular tube extending from the pyloric sphincter to the ileocecal valve
Chemical Digestion of fat starts
nutrient absorption into blood and Lymphatic
Large Intestine
Site of absorption of water
eliminates indigestible food
produces vitamins
Major functions of the digestive systems
Ingestion
- put food through mouth and cause perastalsis and propulsion
Digestion-
breaking down large food into small molecules
Absorption
- transport digested end product into blood
Defacation
- poop out indigestible food
Break down food into molecules that can pass wall of digestive tract and taken up by cells
Layers of the GI tract
Submucosa
lots of elastic fibers to keep shape
Areolar Connective Tissue containing major blood vessels
Mucosa(inner most layer)
Produces mucus for reduction/protection
nonkertanized stratified squamous in moith to protect from friction
Areolar C.Tissue
Muscularis
2 layers of smooth muscles to allow peristalsis and segmentation
mouth, pharynx, and voluntary muscle
Serosa (Outer most layer)
outer covering of GI
composed of thin layer of Areolar C.Tissue
produces serous fluid for lubrication
Stomach
n left hypochondriac region (storage tank for food)
-food mixes with gastric juice to make chyme
-Mechanical/chemical digestion
Disorders of the digestive systems.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Acid reflux (stomach acid or bile creates sort of irritation and heartburn
Hemorrhoid's-
Inflamed veins near rectum/anus region that can cause pain and bleeding
Chronic Diarrhea-
watery substance as feces which creates pain, bloating, and nausea (occurred due to intestinal issues or irritable bowel)
