CONTRAINDICATIONS
heart failure
hyperthyroidism
contraindicated to patients with arrhythmias
during acute recovery phase of myocardial infarction
SIDE EFFECTS
nausea
heartburn
fatigue
constipation
dry mouth
MECHANISM OF ACTION
increases brainstem-mediated noradrenergic inhibition of spinal cord neurons
reduces tonic somatic motor activity
influences gamma and alpha motor neurons
NURSING CONSIDERATIONS
avoid driving or activities that require attention
advise patient to avoid alcohol
inform the patient that this drug may cause severe drowsiness
avoid CNS depressants
