INDICATIONS
the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia and hypercholesterolemia associated with mild hypertriglyceridemia
NURSING CONSIDERATIONS
ASSESMENT
- Allergy to bile acid sequestrants, tartrazine; complete biliary obstruction; abnormal intestinal function; lactation, pregnancy
- Skin lesions, color, T; orientation, affect, reflexes; P, auscultation, baseline ECG, peripheral perfusion; liver evaluation, bowel sounds; lipid studies, LFTs, clotting profile
Interventions
INTERVENTIONS
- Administer drug before meals
- Alert patient and concerned others about high cost of drug.

SIDE EFFECTS
- constipation, nausea, diarrhea, increased bleeding tendency
STORAGE CONDITIONS
- keep in cool and ventilated place
- keep in temperature of 15-30 degree Celsius

TYPES OF CHOLESTYRAMINE DRUGS
ATORVASTATIN
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Atorvastatin inhibits HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol synthesis, which reduces LDL (low density lipoprotein).

NURSING CONSIDERACTION
- don't use to people with hepatic disease
- contraindicated to pregnant women and breasting women

- nausea
- dyspepsia and diarrhea

EZETIMIBE
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Ezetimibe blocks the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestines to reduce LDL

NURSING CONSIDERATION
If medication is combined with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, do not give to pregnant or breastfeeding patients.
STORAGE CONDITIONS
- store at 15-30 degree Celsius
- avoid high temperatures rooms

- arthralgia
- rhabdomyolysis
- hepatic impairment and dizziness

SIMVASTATIN
MECHANISM OF ACTION
works by reducing the amount of cholesterol made by the liver. Lowering "bad" cholesterol and triglycerides and raising "good" cholesterol decreases the risk of heart disease
INDICATION
- Simvastatin helps lower cholesterol production and reduce dyslipidemia associated complications
NURSING CONSIDERATIONS
-History: Allergy to simvastatin, fungal byproducts; impaired hepatic function; pregnancy; lactation
Physical: Orientation, affect; liver evaluation, abdominal examination; lipid studies, LFTs
ROUTE OF ADMINISTRATION
Simvastatin is approved for oral administration and is available in 5-mg, 10-mg, 20-mg, 40-mg, and 80-mg tablets
CONTRAINDICATIONS
- Patients contraindicated to simvastatin who have active liver disease,
- who have elevated hepatic enzymes, pregnancy, and
- pregnant and breastfeeding women
SIDE EFFCTS
- Potentially Fatal: Severe rhabdomyolysis with acute renal failure.
