Types of questions in questionnaires and surveys
Open questions
: respondent can reply freely in their own words to give their responses
Scaled questions
: A common set of possible responses is: agree strongly/agree/neither agree nor disagree/disagree/strongly disagree
Closed or pre-coded question
: questions in which the researcher provides a set of answers from which the respondent can choose, so the researcher limits the responses that can be given.
Types of questionnaires
Self-completion questionnaires
: questionnaires that are completed by the respondent on their own, with the researcher not present.
Structured interviews
: an interview in which the questions are standardized and replies codified.
Strenghts of self-completion questionnaires
Questionnaires can be posted to participants around the world
The researcher is not present so cannot influence the answers given
They are cheap
Participants can complete the questionnaire when they choose
Limitations of self completion questionnaires
:
The response rate is low
If a participant does not understand a question there is no one to explain it
The researcher cannot be sure who answered the questions
Participants often leave some questions unanswered
Guidelines for questionnaires
Start with short interesting questions
Provides alternative answer options
Only necessary questions
No leading questions
Have instructions and simple to complete
Questions in everyday language
Short and with a clear layout
Questions only on what the participant knows
