Henry VII securing the succession and marriage alliances - foreign policy
Henry VIIs children and health
four children
Arthur
Henry
Margaret
Mary
1503 - one year after Arthur died, Elizabeth of York died too. the insecurity of the throne after Arthur died meant Henry was now the heir which raised the issue of what would happen if the king died when Henry was still a child and the Yorkist claimant, Earl of Suffolk seemed to be gaining influence
the dynasty depended on HVIIs survival until his son was old enough to rule and his deteriorating health was a concern to his advisors
there was a growing split between those officials who were associated with the council learned (Empson and Dudley) and some of his other advisors (bishop fox and sir Thomas Lovell)
Henry died on 21st April 1509 but no announcement was made at first, Bishop fox, Richard Western and Margaret Beaufort sought to manipulate the terms of the succession to their advantage - most importantly Empson and Dudley were excluded from their deliberations
The kings death was announced on the 23rd April and the round up of troublemakers began - Empson and Dudley were arrested, presenting a clear message that the new regime was different from the old
Marriage alliances
Arthur and Catherine of Aragon
were married for 5 months until Arthur died in April 1502
part of the treaty of Medina del campo
partly successful - marriage took place but a failure because Arthur died and Isabella of Castile died as well which caused a lot of problems
Henry and Catherine of Aragon
June 1509
fulfilled the treaty of Medina del campo
success as it carried on the treaty although HVII died before they were married and there was a loss of interest in the treaty from both sides
marriage alliances
Margaret and James IV of Scotland
1503
part of the alliance with Scotland to create peace and weaken perkin warbeck
success as Scotland and England kept good relations until HVIIs death. failure as Scotland kept the auld alliance with France and certain tensions remain
Mary and Louis XII of France
1514
HVIII trying to make peace with France (took place after the death of HVII)
failure as marriage doesn't last long as Louis XII died
