Sexual revolution
Women were able to speak up like Mary Whitehouse
Although most changes were not made until the late 1960s which meant there was very little change in the early years
1961 the contraceptive pill was available to buy
Matrimonial Proceedings and Property Act was introduced in 1970
1968 40 women were killed and 100,000 injured from removing unwanted pregnancies - coat hangers would be used
1968 Abortion Act which allowed women to remove unwanted pregnancies
Chatterley's Love was written in 1928 where there were explicit sex descriptions
Married Love in 1918 was written where women had more freedom and were treated better - 750,000 copies sold
Women started to have more freedom and people were open to the idea of sex
War and politics
1924 there were 4 MPs, by 1931 there were 15 in 1945
23 female MPs by 1955
1928 Representation of People Act allowed women over 21 to vote
Although there were 635 MPs in total which suggests there was little significance
1918 Representation of People Act - Women over 30 could vote but life expectancy was only 35
1990 there were 7m people working which was 68% of women which was an increase from 33% in 1951
NUSEC protested in Hyde Park in 1926 with 3500 attending fighting for their rights
1928 24,000 women were working in a Woolwich factory and 3,000 working with London Omnibus
During WWII men were called up which allowed them to have jobs like typists, factories and nurses
Education
1944 Education Act which raised leaving age to 15
1962, 26,000 women were at university
1920 Oxford allowed women to apply
In 1945 33% of the chemical industry were women
Ivy Williams in 1922 was the first female called up to the bar - entering professions which were never gone into before
Although there were a small minority of these women attending because women were discouraged entering professions
Women were able to receive qualifications and apply to university
