Major Organs Of The Digestive System
Stomach: Organ where food sits to be digested mechanically and chemically before going onto the small intestines
Small Intestines: The longer and smaller intestine that does 90% of absorption through its villi and microvilli it contributes to mechanical and chemical digestion
Large Intestine: The large Intestines does 10% of absorption food, no villi present but digests by bacteria, the undigested food will exit the anus as fecal matter
Pancreas: Located behind the stomach and works with the small intestines by secreting pancreatic juices for chemical digestion
Liver:The liver functions by secreting bile into the duodenum to break down fats into smaller chemicals
Mouth: Mainly mechanical digestion by breaking down food through chewing and saliva to break down food in the mouth
Layers of the Stomach
Inside: Mucosa
Submucosa
Muscularis: Oblique muscle layer
Muscularis: Circular muscle layer
Muscularis: Longitudinal muscle layer
Serosa

Digestive Enzymes
Protease/Peptidases: breaks proteins down into amino acids
Amylases, Maltase, Lactase, and Sucrase: Breaks carbohydrates down into monosaccharides
Nucleases: Breaks down nucleic acid into nucleotides
Lipase: Breaks fat into glycerol and fatty acids
Location of Digestion and Absorption of each macromolecule
Mechanical digestion happens in the mouth, stomach, and intestines
Chemical Digestion happens in the stomach and intestines
Absorption happen mostly in the small intestines throughout the villi and microvilli
Major Function Of The Digestive System
Breaking down food through two methods
Mechanical Digestion: Breaking large foods into smaller pieces like chewing, churning of the stomach, and wave like movements
Chemical Digestion: Breaking down food into smaller chemicals so it can be absorbed by the body for metabolism
Disorders of the Digestive system
Acid Reflux: when the lower esophageal sphincter doesn't close properly causing the stomach acid to damage the esophagus
