The Amazon
Flying Rivers
- The forest produces evapotranspiration ( plants + soil )
- Then, it produces aerosols that stimulate cloud formation
- Combined, humidity and aerosols cause local rains
- Rains generate low atmospheric pressure over the forest
- The low pressure area sucks in the humid air above the Atlantic ocean
-
Water
- Rivers substitute road networks
-
- Rich and complex river systems
Holes: stretches of water that connects two rivers, or a river and a lake.
-
-
Economic Activities
- until 1979: regular industrial activities (fashion, drinks and food) and plant/resources gathering (nuts, a lot of exotic woods)
- 1970 - 1990: heavy industrial development (electronics and home appliances) in the Zona Franca de Manaus
- after 1990: mining operations (gold, copper)
- (cattle has always been present and generally focused on exporting meat)
Soil
- Original Amazon soil is not fertile
- If removed, the forest needs a lot of chemicals to be productive again
- It sustains itself due to fallen materials ("carpet of fertility").
-
Fun facts
- It has existed for over 55 million years
- There are a lot of medicinal plants there that haven't even been studied by scientists yet.
- The Amazonian butterflies drink turtle tear.
Environmental Issues
- Biopiracy: unauthorized commercial exploitation of biological materials that are native to a particular territory without providing fair financial compensation to the people or government of that territory
-
Deforastation
- Since 1975, the Amazon is being rapidly destroyed
- Cutting any part of the nature there, can affect many others. If you destroy one tree or kill one animal, the others that depended on that part that you destroyed will also die because they won't have the food they need.
