Major functions of the digestive system
the main function of the digestive system is to breakdown and absorb food and nutrients
chemical digestion breaks food down into simpler chemicals
enzymes are used for chemical digestion
mechanical digestion deals with physically breaking food down into smaller peices
segmentation is a mixing or churning movement
persistalsis is a wave or rippling movement
mastication is the chewing movement
absorption is when digested food moves to the intestines and nutrients are remved
microvilli and villi are what absorb the nutrients from food
