How to develop an inclusive town?
Greater Umhlanga area
A need to expand the city as more people were coming in (informal settlements)
Convert previous farm land into land that can be developed
Durban town centre was moved from Durban to Umhlanga just by virtue of planning
Include: shopping mall, mixed use buildings (shops, restaurants on bottom floors and residential on top floors)
Employ top quality engineers, urban designers, architects to create spaces in the town that are user friendly
Have committees where people from all different areas can meet and help each other. Areas with more money can help poorer areas.
Make links between people from upper class areas and lower class areas that work together to improve the livelihoods of people in the lower class areas.
Developers have to become more sensitive to peoples needs.
Job opportunities
Make the land valuable and seem upmarket so that businesses will want to move into the area
holds up the image of these businesses
Provide the infrastructure so that areas are clearly defined
logos on signage, fountains and bus shelters
Gives the area a sense of place
Area looks good and feels good
Create management associations so that the areas are managed better than normal municipalities.

Or ask the municipality to increase the capacity
Sometimes the municipality will force the developer into a contract so they will have to put money into additional facilities/build them.
