Lived experiences interview #2
Affordable housing
When towns are built up, their property prices go up. This excludes lower income and middle income earners from living in the newly developed areas.
Then it is not an inclusive town as there is not a variety of people.
Put low income residential areas near to industrial areas, retail parks, MMI's, business parks
People are closer to their place of work
Affordable housing is R300000 - R400000
Difficult as land and development is expensive
Build low income homes and give them to people who live in nearby informal settlements so that they can start new communities.
Ethekwini allows people to rent these houses and after a certain amount of years their rental amount gets pooled together to form a deposit so that the reisdent can one day own the house
When people move into these newly developed areas, there is a better calliber of jobs available to you, education, training and therefore the potential to earn money goes up.
What often happens is people are selected from informal settlements and moved to these new areas, they often have to leave jobs and have to maintain these homes.
Education
Must be facilities so that residents of the areas can finish matric and be able to get jobs in the area.
Have facilities to keep upgrading the skills of adults so that they can further their education and achieve promotions
Private companies should invest money into creating training centres so that people can improve their skills and be able to work at these companies
Recreational Activities
Provide a variety of activities
Get funding to build different recreational activities like jungle gyms
Important to plan
The way to get everything working together, is to get the businesses to fund these projects that the poorer areas cannot afford themselves.
Free from marginalisation
Look to create staring committees
Find key members of communities to create terms of reference for how the town will be run.
Solves problems within the community.
Create Mtuba centres where people can come to give their CV's and meeting areas for their businesses
Create an interest in the development of people within developed areas
There must be planning to specifically include people otherwise they are naturally ostracised.
Roles of engineers
Provide the structure for everything that is to be built
They must be in tune with things like transport, human interaction etc.
