North&Central America and the Caribbean region
NORTH AMERICA GENERAL INFORMATION
Its biggest country is Canada and its smallest country is St Kitts and Nevis with only about 54,000 inhabitants. This island country is located in the Caribbean Sea. North America also includes the huge Greenland Island in the northeast and the islands that are located in the north of the Atlantic Ocean, with that at its northern end the continent extends for almost half of the globe.
FIVE PHYSICAL REGIONS OF NORTH AMERICA
North America is divided in 5 physical regions. Within these regions are all the major types of biomes in the world. A biome is a community of animals and plants spreading over an extensive area with a relatively uniform climate.
Western Physical Region
Young mountains rise in the west. The Rockies stretch from the province of:
The Sierra Madre mountain system is part of the Cordilleras.
Cascade Range is one of the the youngest mountains are in the States of Washington, Oregon, and California. They include temperate rainforest, a unique biome in the area.
The rainforest Some trees in this area grow to over 90 meters high and 3 meters wide.Endemic animals in this area: Black bears, elk and marmots.
Desert regions The three major of North America are: the Sonoran, Mojave, and Chihuahuan—are all in the American southwest and northern Mexico. Animal species include the roadrunner, and rattlesnake.
Most of these deposits are located offshore, in the Arctic and Pacific Oceans.
The Great Plain. They are in the middle of the subcontinent. It is the area where a lot of grain is grown , A lot of grain is grown in this region, that is called the «Breadbasket of North America,» which feeds a large part of the world. Native animal species include bison, prairie dogs, and grasshoppers.
The Canadian Shield:The Canadian Shield is a raised but relatively flat plateau. The Canadian Shield is characterized by a rocky landscape pocked by an astounding number of lakes. It stretches along the northern borders of Alaska and Canada to the Hudson Bay area.
The eastern region:This varied region includes the Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic coastal plain.America’s older mountain ranges, including the Appalachians, rise near the east coast of the United States and Canada. Wetland areas are a biome of the eastern region and consist of areas of land whose soil is saturated with permanent or seasonal moisture.
Coastal plains of the Mexican Gulf:Found almost entirely within the United States, the North American Coastal Plain stretches from a small section of northern Mexico along the Gulf of Mexico and up the East Coast to southeastern Massachusetts. Contains much wetland, mostly swamps & marshes.
NATURAL WONDERS OF
NORTH AMERICA
Denali, the highest peak in the subcontinent. He's in Alaska. Denali, the indigenous name means "the larger".
Grand Canyon. It is formed by the Colorado River
Yellowstone National Park, in the states of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, It has some of the most active geysers in the world.
4.1RELIEF
It is mostly a mountainous and rugged region. The North American mountain system continues in Central America where it is called the Cordillera Central which crosses all the countries of this region. It has a lot of
volcanoes, around 60 volcanoes in the interior (not active) and 31 on the Pacific coast (active). The Tajumulco volcano is the highest peak in Guatemala and all of Central America with an altitude of 4222mts above sea level.
4.2 HYDROGRAPHY
Central America does not have long rivers due to its isthmic geography. The Coco river with 680km is the longest one within Central America. It starts in Honduras and flows into Cabo, Nicaragua. Central America has a lot of lakes.
4.3 CLIMATE
The tropical climate is the dominant one, although it also depends on the
altitude. Rainfall is abundant, especially on the Atlantic side.
CENTRAL AMERICA IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Central America is the subcontinent of the American continent. Its territory goes from the isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico to the south of the Isthmus of Panama. It is, then, the strip of land that joins the other two subcontinents, North America and South America.
.
THE CARIBBEAN REGION
This region includes more than 7,000 islands, islets, and coral reefs. Some countries/islands in the Caribbean are: Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, among others.
