Pathophysiology
In different forms of congenital hyperplasia, production of cortisol, aldosterone or both is impaired
because of an autosomal recessive genetic defect in one of the adrenal enzymes involved in synthesizing adrenal steroid hormones from cholesterol
enzymes may be present or deficient, completely or partially disabling synthesis of cortisol, aldosterone or both
Management
-
Adults take hydrocortisone, prednisone or dexamethasone which replace cortisol
Take fludrocortisone to replace aldosterone and also eat salty foods or salty pills may help salt-waters retain salt
Clinical manifestations
-
If foetus is female it results in virilisation of external genitalia and may be delivered with ambigous genitalia
