IBS
Symptoms:
Stomach pain/cramps.
Bloating.
Diarrhea.
Constipation.
Flatulance.
Tiredness/lack of energy.
Nausea.
Backache.
Getting Diagnosed:
The GP will ask questions such as:
What symptoms do you have?
Do they come and go?
How often do you get them?
When do you get them?
How long have you had them for?
The GP might check the tummy for lumps or swelling.
A blood test to check for Coeliac disease.
A poo sample to check for IBD (Irritable Bowel disorder).
There is no one test for IBS.
Diet, lifestyle and medicines:
Diet:
keep a diary of what you eat and any symptoms you get.
cook homemade meals with fresh ingrediance when possible.
Don't eat too quickly.
Try and eat at the same time everyday
Eat no more than 3 portions of fresh fruit a day.
Avoid loads of fizzy or alcoholic drinks.
Medicines:
try probiotics for a month.
Lifestyle:
Get plenty of exercise.
Try and find ways to relax.
How to ease symptoms:
Bloating/cramps/flatulance:
Eat oats regularly.
eat up to 1tbs of linseeds a day.
avoid hard to digest foods (broccoli, beans, brussels sprouts)
Avoid products that contain sorbitol (a sweetner)
Diarrhoea:
cut down on high-fibre foods.
Avoid products that contain sorbitol (a sweetner).
Constipation:
Drink plenty of water.
increase how much soluble fibre eaten (oats, carrots, peeled potatoes).
