Why Pursue Historical Knowledge
Defence Against Propaganda
It allows us to understand the past and distinguish between propaganda and accurate information.
It enables to distinguish between right and wrong through obtaining different sources of historically valuable information, examining interpretations, and critical thinking.
Counter argument:
Historical information can easily manipulated by governments and some other authoritarian figure which leads to the disinformation and propaganda.
Range Of Perspectives
It helps us to have a more objective mindset, which enables us to look from the perspective of not only the winners but also the losers.
Understanding Human Nature
Help us understand the current version of humanity by interpreting the past.
It sets an example of events that we have not experienced personally before.
To observe our natural and instinctive features of humanity.
Shared Memory
In order to understand the history of a country without having any bias and prejudice (cleansing from ideologies)
The Historical Method
Selecting Evidence
Secondary Sources: The interpretation
of historians can be affected by bias and prejudice. (Communist example)
Primary Sources: There are a limited number of people and work with historical value. A lot of the items that contain historical value are gone or damaged.
Explaining the Past
Historians do not simply tell stories, they use reasoning and understanding during the argumentation of past events.
Explanations are provided my interpretations of historians.
Examining Evidence
New secondary sources might be superior to the other secondary sources with a wider scope or a different (maybe better? I don't know if I'm allowed to say better) approach. Even though newer sources are written a lot after the historical event, with the help of primary and older secondary sources and the latest technology these new sources can be really informative.
The Problem of Bias
Bias Identified in Evidence
National Bias
This is the saddest one in my opinion. Ignoring the truth because of where you were born. I quite literally hate this.
Top Choice Bias
Example: A lot of non-nationalist Turks don't accept the Armenian genocide not because they think it's inaccurate but keep up with the society and don't raise any questions(like: is s/he an Armenian agent?!?!?).
Confirmation Bias
Common case. (I did not see anyone suddenly give up on the case they were working on for years.)
Understanding The Past
History is not just about facts, but about patterns of understanding.
Interpretation of an each individual are open to discussion which is actually the history is built upon.
