How and why did Henry break with Rome?
WHY; the succession
by 1529, Henry was desperate for a divorce as he needed a son
Catherine couldn't produce a son and Henry was convinced that the only way that he would be able to have a son would be if he remarried
He couldn't get his annulment from the Pope due to the fact that the Pope was firmly under the control of Catherine's nephew Charles V
WHY; monetary gain
henry was in debt from his European wars and he couldn't raise enough money through taxes, forced loans, etc
Act of Annates- no monasteries or nunneries could pay money to Rome
his foreign policy aims were to fight wars and he couldn't without money
WHY; the state of the church
the church was corrupt
stories of homosexuality, nuns bearing children, mistresses
The Hunne case
1511, a London Merchant couldn't afford to pay high funeral fees that the church was charging for his son's funeral and refused to pay them. He was arrested and later found dead in his cell. Authorities claimed suicide but it was suspected that the clergy killed him
WHY; new protestant idea
Anne Boleyn, Thomas Cromwell and Thomas Cranmer were all Protestants
Henry liked the idea of the King being in charge of the Church rather than the Pope
In his heart, he was a Catholic, he only believed the parts of Protestantism which suited him
HOW; the acts of Supremacy and Succession
Act of Supremacy 1534
formal acknowledgement that England was no longer under the Pope's control
Henry had the right to choose how the church would be organised, the central beliefs of the English church and who would be appointed to the key positions in the church
Cromwell made Vicegerent and could use the powers which legally belonged to the king
in reality, normal people weren't really affected by the break with Rome, they didn't have much association with the Pope anyway
Act of Succession 1534
Henry and Catherine's marriage was declared invalid and Anne was now Henry's lawfully wedded wife
Only Anne's children would be able to inherit the Throne
Princess Mary was declared illegitimate
signified the break with Rome, Henry rejected the authority of Rome and divorced Catherine anyway
individuals were required to take the Oath of Succession
all of England's political and religious leaders were made to take this
people who didn't take it were punished as traitors
the treason act of 1534
death to anyone denying the Royal supremacy
