Sh'ia: muslims who believe(d) Ali should have been the successor of the Prophet Mohammed
Sufism: an aspect of Islamic mysticism
Sunni: muslims who believe(d) Abu Bakr should have been the successor of the Prophet Mohammed
Five Pillars: five obligations that every muslim must satisfy in order to live a good and responsible life
Salat (2nd pillar): obligatory prayers performed five times a day
Zakat (3rd pillar): compulsory giving of a set proportion of one's wealth to charity

Shirk: idolatry or polytheism, the worship of anything but Allah
