Do NOT water down or simplify curriculum for ESL students, instead break down the content they are learning into chunks to make it less stressful.
Depending on the stage the English learner is in, alter assessments to fit that stage.
Including a welcoming environment
It's so important to include diversity, and allow english speakers to learn ESL students language to, such as including books in the library that include the students culture and language
Including spanish on labels under english
Having cultural units, and letting an ESL student share about their family
Stages for English Learners
Preproduction stage: Silent stage where the student may not speak any English at all.
Early Production. Students start saying one to two word phrases
Intermediate Fluency. Skills from the emergence stage are growing and students are talking longer.
Speech Emergence. Students are able to speak in short sentences.
Advanced Fluency. Students demonstrate near-native talk and communication.
