The historical method
Selecting evidence
The evidence available to a historian is necessarily limited. Primary sources might include, archaeological findings.
Assessing significance
History is not a record of everything that happened in the past but is concerned with only the significant events in the past.
Understanding the past
The same event or the same person can have different legitimate interpretations, and the task of the historian is to understand this complexity.

History is concerned not simply with describing the past, but also with explaining it and trying to understand why events happened.
