Our group (group 5) really enjoyed working on food security and as a result we focused in on Durham and Asheville, NC. These two cities have organizations that connect farmers to local consumers and entrepreneurs. Bull City Cool: rentable warehouse space meant for local farmers to bring fresh produce to an underserved community. PFAP (Piedmont Food + Agricultural Processing): food business incubator that allows businesses to food prep, process, and pack, as well as teaches product development, consulting, etc. Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project: Helps local farms; links farmers to markets; builds healthy community by connecting locals to food. In class we also heard from guest speakers Molly De Marco and Jess Dorrance about UNC's own issues with food insecurity. Students are often unaware of the financial consequences of loans, resources for affordable food, and feel ashamed to talk about their food insecurity or do not realize they are in need of help.
