SIDE EFFECTS
redness or swelling of the breast

decrease in the amount of urine
vaginal bleeding
tightness in the chest
irritation
joint pain, stiffness, or swelling
CONTRAINDICATIONS
nausea, vomiting, bloating, increased weight, water retention, breast tenderness, vaginal discharge, heavy legs, and leg cramps.
Contraindications of estrogens include coagulation problems, cardiovascular diseases, liver disease, and certain hormone-sensitive cancers such as breast cancer and endometrial cancer.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
Estrogens act through binding to nuclear receptors in estrogen-responsive tissues
estrogen is produced by conversion of androstenedione, secreted by the adrenal cortex, to estrone in the peripheral tissues.
Circulating estrogens modulate the pituitary secretion of the gonadotropins, luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone through a negative feedback mechanism. Estrogens act to reduce the elevated levels of these hormones seen in postmenopausal women.
