development catch up following adoption after severe global early privation - RUTTER 1998
aim
to assess whether loving and nurturing care could overturn the effects of privation the children had suffered in romanian orphanages
procedure
longitudinal study incorporating a quasi experiment
independent variable was the age of adoption
condition 1: children adopted before he age of 6 months
condition 2: children adopted between 6 months and 2 years
condition 3: children adopted after 2 years
Dependent variable children's level of cognitive functioning
findings
50% of romanian orphans were retarded in cognitive functioning at initial assessment
At 4 the orphans showed improvements in physical and cognitive development
those adopted before 6 months were doing as well as british adopted children
conclusion
the negative effects of industrialisation can be overcome by sensitive nurturing care
as the british adopted children did not suffer development outcomes it can be seen that the separation from cares will not on its own cause negative development
evaluation
only some received detailed clinical investigation difficult to generalise findings
were not studied in romanian orphanages was not possible to state which aspects of privation were most influential
children were only assessed until 4 so follow ups required to asses long term effects of institution
