- - - - ASCII is a way of storing characters using 1 byte. This format was one of the first common ways of transmitting and storing information in a format which other computer systems and software could understand. It was developed in the 1960's.
      - ASCII makes use of a check digit (the leftmost bit) - this is used to ensure that other bits were transmitted/stored correctly.
      - Because the leftmost bit is check digit, there are only 128 possible values. The highest number that can be represented in ASCII is 127. This means that there are 128 possible values.
      - • ASCII has different codes for lowercase and uppercase letters
        • ASCII is not appropriate for use in many other languages - since it only represents English characters
        • Extended ASCII doesn't make use of a check digit
    - - Extended ASCII is the same as ASCII but without the leftmost bit being used as a check digit. The full byte is used to represented each character. This means that it can represent a total of 256 different characters. This means that extended ASCII can represent characters that are used in some more languages than ASCII.
    - - Unicode uses 2 bytes to represent each character. A total 65,000 possible characters can be represented.
