Function: secreted in inactive form to prevent self-digestion
- Lipases
Function: for lipids
- Amylase
Function: for carbohydrates
- Nucleases
Function: for nucleic acids
Layers of the GI tract
- Submucosa:
Consists of: areolar connective tissue
Contains:
-blood and lymphatic vessels
-lymphoid follicles
-submucosal nerve plexus that supply surrounding GI tract tissues
-Has the abundant amount of elastic tissues that help organs to regain shape after storing a large meal
- Muscularis externa:
responsible for segmentation & peristalsis
Contains:
-inner circular muscle layer
-outer longitudinal layers
- Mucosa:
Tunic layer that lines the lumen
Functions:
1, Secretes: mucus, digestive enzymes, & hormones
2, Absorbs end products of digestion
3, Protects against infectious disease
- Serosa:
Outermost layer, made up of the visceral peritoneum
