- In the morning Sadao checked the guest room first. If the man was gone then he would tell Hana that the general had ordered for him to be removed. He sees that Tom is sleeping and quietly leaves
- Sadao helped Tom go to bed
- The man said that it would not bother him. His face was gaunt. He had a stubble
- It rained the third night
- Sadao promises Hana that he would decide what to do with Tom in 1-2 days
- Tom was still weak. He held the chair so tight his knuckles went white
2.He said if he had not reached Sadao, he would have died.
- Sadao was restless all through the night. He felt as if people were coming to kill Tom
- He was not able to sleep properly the next night. Hana asked if they should close the partition door and Sadao refused
- He said that if all the Japanese were like Sadao there would be no war.
- The garden was full of the sound of water dripping down the roof and running springs
- The next morning the American was still there

- Sadao heads home and thinks about the plan and decides not to tell Hana about it as to not scare her.
- The general said that it was unfortunate that Tom washed up on Sadao's doorstep. Sadao agrees.
- He tells Sadao that he will send 2 of his private assassins and asks him to keep Tom's door opens to the garden when he is asleep.
- The general suggests that Tom is killed, by someone that does not know him.
- Sadao agrees and tells the general that the door was left open every night.
- The general says that the assassins know the trick to inward bleeding and suggests that they can even get rid of Tom's body. Sadao agrees thinking about Hana.
- Sadao justifies to himself that because of the state of japan and for rulers to deal with their enemies, assassins were a necessity.
- He tries to stay collected as he goes to Tom's room but the white man was already out of his bed and trying to go to the garden.
- Sadao demands to know who allowed Tom to leave his room, to which Tom replies that he isn't used to asking permission.
- Tom says he feels good but asks if the muscles on his side will always feel stiff.
- Sadao is surprised as he thought he had already tended to Tom but can't help lifting up Tom's shirt up to look at the healing.

- sadao goes to see the general.
- hana says, "i thought they were here to arrest you"
- “Evidently you can save anyone- you are so skilled” the general praises sadao
- “Certainly i can allow nothing to happen to you” the general says with anxiety.
- “There are other surgeons, excellency” sadao suggested
“None i trust” the general replied
- “It seems a pity that we cannot better combine the german ruthlessness with american sentimentality.”
- Sadao smiled. “Im not quite sure” ,he said. “ but for your sake i would be willing to try, excellency”
- The general suddenly felt weak and overwhelmed with all the cares of his life as an official in times such as these

- His terror infected her. There was only silence.
- Hana heard the loud crash and asked what it was. The baby woke at her voice and began to wail.
