Work involving low pay and long hours was called Sweated Industry and the workers were known as Sweaters
These people worked in sweatshops, many workers in Sweated Trades were Jewish immigrants.
Why They Were Accepted

The Jews spoke Yiddish and were thought as ousiders
As well as following a completely different Religion, the were not liked - portrayed as 'aliens' and 'infectious'

As a result of the Jews moving over to Scotland, anti-semantic statements were made about them and their culture in Newspapers
Jews were stereotyped with stealing money, however the Scots did not mind the Jews because of their shared experience in Unions and Similar Work
The Outcome
In the end, Jews were TOLERATED but not ACCEPTED
As there was NOT a total divide between Scottish Christians and Jews
The Jews introducing the Cigarette Industry in Scotland lifted some of the hate
