The Rights of a Child
Article 37
No one is allowed to punish
you in a cruel or harmful way.
What punishments are considered too severe?
How many children are being severely punished?
If a parent or teacher feels the need to physically restrain a child, should they be able to, and if so, under what circumstances?
Article 8
You have the right to an identity - an official record of who you are. No one should take this away from you.
Article 14
You have the right to choose your own religion and beliefs. Your parents should help you decide what is right and wrong, and what is best for you.
How much should your parents or community be able to influence your identity and beliefs?
Parents and caregivers have to power to teach their religion to their young children, so do those children really get a choice?
Article 31
You have the right to play and rest.
Interests me because:
I wonder how much time should children be expected to spend working rather than playing?
And at what age do most people get their first jobs?
And how much homework is too much for a child?
A website about the rights of a child would provide information to parents, and also children to help them understand their own rights. Parents understanding the rights of their children will help to keep those children safe.
Parents and caregivers of children (under 18 years old) need to understand the rights of their children and share these rights with them because knowing them can help to keep those children safe in their homes and communities.
About child labor with mica mining
I hadn’t heard of mica, and it’s really alarming that such a common material comes from such awful activities. Families, especially with young children, shouldn’t have to mine in harsh environments for our products. It’s also terrible that the people getting these materials probably don’t ever get to use the products made from them. I hope that with more people learning about this changes will be made. Surely there are better ways of mining that don’t require children.
