pH and the environment
-
If the pH is too high or too low compared to the standards, then those organisms may die (4)
“Soil pH affects the number of nutrients and chemicals that are soluble in soil water, and therefore the number of nutrients available to plants” (5)
Humans can affect pH
“Pollution in the air, soil or directly in the water can all affect pH” (4)
-
pH in food (2)
- Bananas have a pH of 4.85 - Cheese (like mozzarella) has a pH of 5.25
- Potatoes have a pH of 5.65
- Tomatoes have a pH of 4.60
“Our bodies are constantly working to restore the [...] balance that's temporarily disrupted whenever we eat or drink something that's too acidic or alkaline” (3)
What is pH?
It measures the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution, or it measures how basic a substance is
(1)
pH scale
If (1)
pH < 7
more acidic, or more hydrogen ions than hydroxide ions
pH = 7
solution is neutral, or the number of positive hydrogen ions equals the number of negative hydroxide or OH ions
pH > 7
less acidic, or fewer hydrogen ions than hydroxide ions
