Networks and Topologies
-
types of networks
LAN= local area network, two or more computers connected together, either directly or through a central hub or router
workstations connected with a cable (wired network) or wireless connections if on a wireless network
other network devices e.g. printers, cameras and internet connections- connected through the hub (star topology)
FEATURES OF LAN
all of the network is usually in one location e.g. school, shop or business
the organisation owns all of the hardware e.g. cabling, switches, servers
organisation manages the LAN- staff install, update and fix faults
WAN= wide area network, larger, more complex network- covers a much larger geographical area e.g. the internet (multiple LANs connected to a central hub)
FEATURES OF WAN
a WAN connects connects 2 or more LANS, which can be in different locations
the connection between the LANs are owned by a separate company- organisations have to pay a subscription to use it
the connection is managed by the external company- they will install, maintain and update it
