Working Memory Model, Baddeley and Hitch
Central Executive- Drives whole system allocates data to subsystems i.e. phonological loop, visuospatial sketchpad. Deals with mental maths and problem-solving
Episodic Buffer- Added in 2000, acts as a 'backup' store, communicates with both LTM, STM and the other components of the working memory
Visuospatial Sketchpad- Stores and processes info in a visual or spatial form, used for navigation
Phonological Loop- Deals with spoken and written material, subdivided into phonological store and articulatory process.
Articulatory Control System- (Inner voice) processes speech production, rehearses and stores verbal info from the phonological store
Phonological Store- (Inner ear) processes speech perception and stores spoken words we hear for 1-2 seconds
Evaluation
+Explains a lot more than the multi-storey model, applies to real life tasks, reading=phonological loop, problem solving=central executive, navigation=visual and spatial processing
+KF study, suffered brain damage from motorbike accident, damaged his STM, impairment was mainly verbal info, memory for visual info largely unaffected. Shows there are separate STM components for visual info(VSS) and verbal info (phonological loop
-
-Lieberman (1980) criticised as (VSS) implies that all spatial info was first visual (they're linked), but he pointed out that blind people have excellent spatial awareness, even though they've never had any visual info. He argues that VSS should be separated into two diff.t components; one for visual info one for spatial
-Little direct evidence for how the central executive works and what it does, capacity has never been measured
-Working memory only involves STM, so not complete comprehensive model of memory as it doesn't include SM or LTM. Does not explain changes in processing ability that occur as the result of practice or time
