The Middle East is between three continents.

The ancient Arabs were nomads.

Most people who live in the Middle East today follow a religion called Islam
The people who follow Islam are called Muslims
Islam Was founded by a religious leader named Muhammed, who lived in Mecca in the early 600s. Muhammad died in 632.
One day Muhammad was praying in and mountain cave, He heard a voice tell him that there was only one god, named Allah. Muhammad began to teach people in the city of Mecca about Allah. His religion was now called Islam.
Islam
means "surrender to God"
Islam is still a major religion. Millions of Muslims follow the teaching of the Koran, the holy book of Islam.
The Koran teaches that every Muslim has certain duties to Islam. Muslims believe that five religious duties are so important that they are part of their everyday life. The call these duties the Five Pillars of Islam.
The duty of faith is very important to Islam.
This means that all Muslims must state that they believed in one god and in Muhammad as the person who speaks for god. The duty of payer means that Muslims must pray five times every day. Muslims always turn toward Mecca to pray because this is where Muhammad first began to teach. The third Muslim duty, or Pillar of Islam, is giving help to the poor. Muslims must give money, or alms, to the poor. Fasting and pilgrimage are the fourth and fifth Pillars of Islam Text
Family duties are also very important in Islamic countries. Most of the people live together as an extended family. An extended family may include a child's parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. But the woman may have only one husband.
Women in many Islamic cultures wear an all-covering black robe, called a chador
, in public.
Sometimes a veil is also worn so that only the eyes can be see. Many Muslims who follow the Koran believe that no men outside a woman's family should see her unless she is wearing a chador
