Grade
5
4
assigned when the patient
can complete the full ROM
against gravity
but is not able to hold the test position
against maximal resistance
• when maximal resistance results in a break or give irrespective of age or disability, the ms is assigned a grade 4.
3
the ms or ms group test
can complete a full ROM
against the resistance of gravity
also called as active range.
• Even if tested ms can move through a full range against gravity and tolerate a small or mild amnt of resistance, the ms is assigned a grade 3.

1
Assigned when the therapist
can detect visually or by palpation
some contractile activity
in one or more of the ms
that participate in the action being tested.

is assigned when a patient
can complete full ROM
against gravity
& holds the test position
against maximal resistance.
• If the therapist can break a patient’s hold, a grade 5 should not be assigned

break Test
- Manual resistance is applied to a limb or another part of body when it has actively completed its ROM against gravity
- Manual resistance should always be applied opposite to participation muscle or muscle
- The patient is asked hold the body segment at or near the end or available range.
- Or at the point in the range the muscle is most strongly challenged.
- At this point the patient is instructed to not allow the therapist to break the hold while therapist applies manual resistance.
Make test
- This is an alternative to break test, application of manual resistance against an actively contracting ms or group of ms. (that is opposite the direction of movement)
- Test matches the patient resistance but does not overcome it.
- During the max contraction, the therapist gradually (over approx. 3 sec) increase the amnt of manual resistance until it matches the patient maximal level.
