Orthopedic Emergencies: Field Stabilization - Coggle Diagram
Orthopedic Emergencies: Field Stabilization
thoracic limbs:
above shoulder: no immobilization necessary
between shoulder and elbow
caudal splint up to as high as possible
past the elbow to lock carpus in extension
between elbow and carpus
Robert-Jones bandage
extended lateral splint to the withers and palmar splint to elbow
between carpus and fetlock:
Robert -Jones bandage
with caudal and lateral splint
Don’t point toe
Splints extending from ground past the elbow
lower than fetlock
dorsal splint (or Kimzey splint)
Bandage and splint extend from ground to carpus
Want toe pointed
for hindlimbs:
above stifle: no immobilization necessary
Between stifle and tarsus:
Robert-Jones bandage
with extended lateral splint at least to the hip
Bandage from ground to the stifle
Between tarsus and fetlock
Robert-Jones bandage
with plantar splint to calcaneus and lateral splint extending past the tarsus
Do not point toe
below fetlock: plantar splint (or Kimzey)
bandage and splint must extend from ground to tarsus
want toe pointed
factors can preventing fracture healing
Movement
infection
inappropriate reduction
Kimzey splint
Provide support along front of leg
allowing immediate relief of pressure on the damaged area
quick stabilization
Meant for use on a front leg
can be used on a hind leg if the leg needs to be in a “tip-toe” position
best for...
Sesamoid fractures
fractures of long and short pastern bones
fractures of cannon bone
failure of suspensory ligament system
splinting fractures/tendon lacerations for transport
Splints
should be placed perpendicularly
Prevent medio-lateral and dorso- palmar/plantar movement
If fractured forelimb: face backwards in trailer
If fractured hindlimb: face forwards in trailer
Joint above and below
