Factors Affecting Climate - Coggle Diagram
Factors Affecting Climate
Latitude
-The closer an area is to the equator the warmer it is.
-The sun's energy is more concentrated at the equator that at the poles.
-The atmosphere filters out more of the Sun's rays as you move away from the equator.
Ocean Currents
-Ocean currents are like rivers that move the ocean waters.
-Currents take on the temperature characteristics of the area where they start.
-Warm currents bring warm, moist air to coastal areas.
-Cold currents bring cooler, somewhat drier air.
Winds and Air Masses
-Wind occurs when air moves across Earth's surface from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure.
-Air masses are large volumes of air that take on the temperature.
Relief
-Relief refers to changes in terrain of elevation which may lead to percipitaion.
-As warm, moist air moves up the mountainside, it cools and condenses to form clouds.
-When the water droplets become too heavy to be held by the clouds, they fall as precipitation.
Elevation
-The Higher the elevations the cooler it gets.
-The air gets thinner the higher you go.
-As air rises, it expands due to reduction in atmospheric pressure.
Nearness to a Body of Water
-Water heats and cools more slowly than land.
-The further a location is from a large body of water, = extreme range of temperature during the year.
