Diploid parent cells produces four genetically-different gametes which half the number of chromosomes (haploid)

Fertilisation fuses the egg and sperm together to produce a zygote. This combines copies of each chromosome from each parent cells, adding variation to the offspring.
Sexual reproduction results in variation because two different cells fuse to create a zygote. This means genetics from different cells are chosen. As well as this the chromosoem pairs line up next to each other in a random order.
Sperm and egg cells have 23 chromosomes each. Once they combine to make a zygote they have 46 chromosomes each.
Gametes contain half the genetic material of one normal cell, this is a haploid.
