John 17 - Jesus' prayer#1
Towards the end of the gospel J prays for his disciples.
himself
his disciples
all believers
Such reassurance, that had they let it sink in the disciples would not have been afraid that he was going to die.
Written later, in the light of understanding
Our section is about the disciples - those whom God gave to Jesus
Took them out of the world for this role
But now J is not going to remain in the world
And the disciples have to return to the world - and the world hates them
Under Jesus protection (3 years)
So J prays to god to protect them from the evil one - the world
The world is a gift from God. God so loved the world that he gave...
Jesus came into the world to live God's light fully
But the world rejected him
However, the world has also rejected the light of God, has denied the gift, subjugated people, and pushed down the poor, the women, and the oppressed.
The world is a dangerous place!
So dangerous that Jesus asks God to protect his people from this world!
And this is the place where we live - this is the place that Jesus sent his disciples back into.
This is the place where God wants us to be - even though sometimes we may feel that we don't belong
If we don't belong - what's the point of caring for a planet for which we don't belong?
Distinction between 'world' and 'earth'
the world we live in and must deny and the earth that we live in and must work for.
Everything that lives is a gift from God. The earth and the universe
The world is the selfish structures, the abuses of power that keep people downtrodden, the ability to ignore millions of people who are denied basic rights. The destruction of the habitats of animals, the denial of global warming. The world is an enemy of the earth!
