Special Ed Referral Process in My School
Step 1: Teachers observe students experiencing challenges
Communicate with parents, gather information on student profile, change instruction style.
Step 2: If challenges persist, students will be referred to In-school Support Team (IST)
Guidance Counsellors, Learning Strategy Teachers, Educational Assistants
Step 3: IST work on the student's profile updated by teachers (samples, tests, observation, conversations)
Step 3.1: IST work collaboratively with teachers and parents to develop learning support plans
Step 3.2: Based on the strategies provided by IST, teachers practice differential instructions.

Step 4: If the learning support plan has limited success, the IST then will refer the student to the School Support Team (SST)
SST includes psychologists, social workers, speech therapists, occupational therapists, caregivers, etc.
Step 5: Based on the findings, SST may make a referral to IPRC. The request is made by the principal, or parents.
Step 6: IPRC will specify the type of exceptionality and decide an appropriate placement.
Students join regular class, with modification on their classroom learning and assessments, meet IST on a regular basis, to make adjustments.
Students need to be placed in a special education class may consider contact school board, and find the best fit for them.
Step 7: IPRC review assessment and the placement plan annually and take further steps.
