Chemistry
Compound
-
-
Examples: Water - H2O, Salt - NaCl.
Compounds have formulas which tell you which elements are in the compound. Compounds can be broken into their elements through reactions.
Element
-
Atoms are the building block of all matter. If the atoms in a substance are the same, the substance is an element.
Examples: Iron - Fe, Copper - Cu, Oxygen - O2, Ozone - 03.
Matter
Matter can exist in three different states - solid, liquid and gas
Can be elements, compounds, pure substances or mixtures.
Pure Substances
Pure substances may be elements or compounds. Pure substances are a form of matter that has a constant chemical composition and characteristic properties (atomic mass).
-
Mixture
In chemistry, a mixture is a material made up of two or more different substances which are not chemically combined. A mixture is the physical combination of two or more substances in which the identities are retained and are mixed in the form of solutions, suspensions and colloids.
-
Heterogenous Mixture
A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture in which the composition is not uniform throughout the mixture. A heterogeneous mixture consists of two or more phases. When oil and water are combined, they do not mix evenly, but instead form two separate layers. Each of the layers is called a phase.
