Chapter 15 ¨The Middle East¨
The Middle East is between three continents, Europe, Asia, and Africa all come together at the eastern end of the Mediterranian Sea. Saudi Arabia is the largest country in the Middle East. The ancient Arabs here nomads. Nomads are people who moved from place to placein search of food and water. Some Arabs are still nomads today, most people in The Middle East today, live in towns and cities.
Ramadan
It is the ninth month on the Muslim calendar.
During the Ramadan, Muslims are not supposed to eat or drink between dawn and sunset.
The Five Pillars of Islam
They are the five religious duties that are part of their everyday life.
Faith.- is very important to Islam.
Prayer.- Muslims must pray five times every day.
Alms.- giving help to the poor.
Fasting.- to go without eating.
Pilgrimage.- a trip for religious reasons.
ISRAEL
It is very different from most countries in the Middle East.
Most people practice Judaism.
Israel’s history is connected to what happened in World War II.
Hitler and the Nazis killed millions of Jews during the war.
In 1948, the nation of Israel was formed.
Israel has democratic government.
One of the most famous leaders of Israel was Golda Meir.
She was born in Russia.
She was prime minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974.
The family
Family duties are very important in Islamic countries.
Most people live together as an extended family.
It may include a child’s, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
According to the Islamic law, a man may have as many as four wives. But a woman may have only one husband.
Women in many Islamic cultures wear an all-covering black robe, called a chador, in public.
Sometimes women wear a veil, so that only the eyes can be seen.
ISLAM:
Islam began in the Middle East.
The people who follow the Islam are called Muslims.
Muslims believe in one god. (Allah)
Islam was founded by a religious leader named Muhammad. He died in 632.
Muslim armies conquered people and taught them to believe in Islam.
The Muslims had created a huge empire in the Middle East.
Islam is still a major religion.
Millions of Muslims follow the teaching of the Koran.
KORAN.- the holy book of Islam.
The Koran teaches that every Muslim has certain duties to Islam.
