COMPONENT 2 - HEALTH AND PERFORMANCE
TYPES OF HEALTH
(effects of sport on them)
PHYSICAL
Increased Cardiovascular fitness
Reduced risk of CHD + Stroke
The physical benefits we can gain from being active
Increased ability to fight off illness
Common Cold, Flu, Heart Attack, Stroke
Controlling Body Composition
Reduced risk of type 2 diabetes + obesity
Increased muscular strength + endurance
Reduced risk of osteoporosis
EMOTIONAL
The psychological benefits we can gain from being active
Increased self-esteem and confidence
Sense of achievement
Relieving stress + tension
Endorphins released during exercise help anxiety
Feeling good
Release of Serotonin.
Improved fitness and body shape helps confidence
SOCIAL
The ability to mix with other people
Co-operation skills
Developing friendships
Sportsmanship
Gaining a good attitude towards competition
SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE
A form of lifestyle with no or irregular physical activity
OVERWEIGHT
A person who is significantly heavier than their optimum weight
OVERFAT
A person who has an abnormally large % of body fat
OBESE
A person who is significantly overfat
LONG TERM CONSEQUENCES
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE - arteries blocked by fatty particles + harder blood movement
STROKE - Arteries are prevented from supplying the brain with Oxygen
HEART ATTACKS - heart stops pumping
OSTEOPOROSIS - bones become brittle as there is a lower bone density - Starved of minerals
POOR MUSCLE TONE/ POSTURE - when muscles are in slight tension ready for action
FITNESS AND WELLBEING
DIET
consuming too many saturated fats and not enough fruits, vegetables and protein will effect an individual's health
ACTIVITY LEVEL
There is a clear link between calorie intake, exercise and weight
If an individual's activity level is too low they risk obesity
WORK, REST, SLEEP BALANCE
Balance between training, sufficient rest and sleep is crucial to ensure a healthy body
RECREATIONAL DRUGS
Alcohol + Nicotine have harmful side effects and can effect performance capacities
Nicotine is taken into the bloodstream
BALANCED DIET
MICRONUTRIENTS
FIBRE
Required to aid the smooth working of our digestive system
Cereal, Fruit
Soluble fibre - reduces cholesterol eg. fruit + barley
Insoluble fibre - keeps the bowel healthy eg. wholemeal cereals
VITAMINS
Resisting infection + Disease
Good Vision + Skin
Red Blood Cell Formation and clotting
Healthy Bones and Teeth
WATER
Human body is 75% water
This is lost through sweating, urine, and breathing
Dehydration
MINERALS
Help the body function
Increase the efficiency of carrying Oxygen to muscles
Calcium in milk , iron in Red Meat eg Sodium
Nutrients we require in a small amount
MACRONUTRIENTS
PROTEIN
15-20% of intake
Muscle growth
Repair damaged tissue
Provide energy
consumed after training (ANIMAL + PLANT)
FATS
25-30% of intake
Energy when Carb stores are low
Slowly released energy
SATURATED - BAD - Full fat dairy, fatty meats
UNSATURATED - GOOD - Avocados
Endurance activities
CARBOHYDRATES
55-60% of intake
Source of energy
SIMPLE - (sugars) -Easy to break down producing a sugar high eg. fructose, energy gels
COMPLEX - (starch) -Hard to break down provide slow release energy eg. bread
CARB LOADING - maximise stores of glycogen in ther muscles and liver
Nutrients we require in large amounts
FEEDBACK
INTRINSIC FEEDBACK
From the performer themselves
Can effect motivation
Not good for beginners as they lack knowledge
TERMINAL FEEDBACK
Given at the end of a game or performance
More reflective and gives overview of the whole performance
EXTRINSIC FEEDBACK
From an outside source
Will help motivate an individual to improve
Can also come from teammates, family, peers
CONCURRENT FEEDBACK
Given at the time of the performance.
Can be acted on immediately
QUALITATIVE - subjective - difficult to measure eg perception
QUANTITATIVE - objective - easy to measure - assists
GUIDANCE
VISUAL GUIDANCE
Demonstration
:check: can provide a mental image of the skill
:red_cross:Cannot ask questions to clarify understanding.
EG. demonstrating a shot in tennis
VERBAL GUIDANCE
Often used simultaneously with Visual
:check: Can explain in further detail
:check: Can emphasise specific skills
:red_cross: Difficult for beginners to understand
MECHANICAL + MANUAL
Coach is in physical contact with the learner
:check: Can execute the skill safely
:check: Can help feel 'Kinaesthesia'
:red_cross: Not possible for all sports.
:red_cross: Often requires equipment
MENTAL PREPARATION
VISUALISATION OF SUCCESS
MENTAL REHEARSAL
IMAGINING INDIVIDUAL SUB-ROUTINES
FACTORS AFFECTING PARTICIPATION
GENDER - Media and public perception / less coverage and female prsenters
ETHNICITY - Combined by common cultural, linguistic, religious traits - Racist abuse in football
SOCIO-ECONOMIC GROUP - demographics based largely on the head of the household - polo vs boxing
DISABILITY - Opportunities are reduced
AGE - As you get older work + family prevent you from participating eg gymnastics
INFLUENCE OF OTHER PEOPLE - People tend to choose the same activities as people around them
